Today we had two mourning doves at the feeder for quite a while. They
could well be related to the pair that we had nesting over our side door light
last year.
The appearance of the chickadee today is another indicator of where we are on
the calendar. It looks like they are beginning to venture out of the
nearby woods, perhaps in search of easy food.

This sighting is not new, rare nor spectacular. This is, however,
the first crow that I have 'seen' in our neighbourhood since before Christmas.
I consider it to be the first natural notice that winter is slipping away
towards spring!

My first contact with wildlife in 2012 occurred at aproximately 7:15 a.m.
January 1 when the faint "caw, caw, caw" of a crow slipped in through my
slightly open bedroom window. Over the next 15-20 minutes the intensity of
the calls gradualaly increase and then, suddenly, they stopped.
My second encounter was my observation of a beautiful gray squirrel foraging at
the base of our front yard feeder and later curled around the feeder gorging
him/herself from the freshly filled feeder and sending a cascade of seeds to the
ground for later easy foraging.
Members of our resident flock of European House Sparrows were seen hopping
through the eunonymous bushes at the front of the house waiting for a turn at
the feeders. Eventually, with the departure of the gray squirrel, the
sparrows were able to briefly swarm the feeders and raid the spillage on the
ground.
The arrival of two black squirrels and the gray squirrel put a quick end to the
sparrows quest for food. Not to be outdone by these pesky squirrels, the
sparrows soon found more opportunities to lower the level of the seeds in the
feeders.
A casual look out the kitchen window produced a chunky looking chipmunk casually
grooming/primping him/herself at the base of the drain pipe on the other side of
the neighbour's driveway.
A further check out the feeder window found two Black-capped Chickadees stocking
up for the day, not the least bit intimidated by the presence of two black
squirrels.
And so, for the wildlife in our neighbourhood, 2012 begins as 2011 ended, with
the quest for food being a very high priority.
