The KWFN Young Naturalists is a club sponsored by the Kitchener-Waterloo Field Naturalists to encourage kids to enjoy nature. It's a great place for kids (7-12 years of age) to get together, share exciting nature experiences and stories, and learn more about our amazing local environment.
The Young Naturalists Club is open to kids 7-12 years of age.
Registration is necessary.
Due to a requirement made by our insurance provider, a parent or guardian must
stay with their child for the duration of each program.
The cost for the September 2012 to May 2013 session is $45.00 per child and
$40.00 per additional child in the same family.
It may be possible to join part way through the year if space permits. Please
contact Kelly Holdaway at
kellyholdaway@rogers.com for more information in this regard.
The programs will be held at the Laurel Creek Nature Centre, 525 Beaver Creek Road, Waterloo, and will take place on Saturday morning from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon unless otherwise announced ahead of time.
September 29/12
Introductions, journal making and start of the first program of the year!! Our
topic will be Butterflies and Dragonflies- We will do an insect hunt to capture
all things creeping, crawling and flying. This is a follow-up to our spring
insect hunt to discover what different species are present this time of year.
October 27/12
Seeds, spores and fall mushroom hike. This is the time of year when plants are
closing down, dying back, and sending out seeds for next year. We will take a
hike to explore these interesting processes, collect some seeds and hopefully
enjoy some good fall weather! Discover what sort of seed packages plants produce
and how they disperse them.
November 24/12
Flying Squirrels and Forest Ecology. Join naturalist and
flying squirrel expert Steve Patterson as he sheds light upon these fascinating
nocturnal forest-dwellers. Marvel at his furry ambassador of forest
health, flying squirrel Scooter!
January 26/13
Back by popular demand- snowshoeing! Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we
can explore winter via snowshoes. Alternatively, we will be learning about the
Great Backyard Bird Count, and monitoring birds in our yards, and how we can
contribute to Citizen Science!
*February 23/13
Owl prowl. This evening program will run from 7:30-9:30 and will teach you about
our local owls. We will view some specimens, learn some owl calls and go on a
night hike to find any that may be nesting in our forest!
March 30/13
Rocks and Minerals. We are hoping to set up an offsite visit to the Rocks and
Minerals Museum at UW to view their collection of dinosaur bones and other cool
stuff!
April 27/13
Photographing nature. Using a camera, learn the elements of a good photo and how
to capture that magical moment in nature. We will go on a hike to look for
spring wildflowers and birds and anything else that may be ‘photogenic’!
May 25/13
Pond dipping! Always popular, we will visit the pond and find out what is living
there, from frogs to tiny invertebrates, even baby dragonflies!
